GIS & DATA MANAGEMENT ASSISTANT
Position: GIS & Data Management Assistant
Contract: Full Time – 1 year renewable
Project: USAID Community-based Forests Program (CFP)
Location: Mfuwe, Zambia
Reporting To: GIS and Remote Sensing Management Technician
BioCarbon Partners (BCP) is a dynamic African-registered and headquartered REDD+ project development and management company. The organisation is currently recruiting a GIS and Data Management Assistant to support operations in the Eastern Province. Under direct supervision of the GIS and Remote Sensing Technician, the candidate will perform basic Geographic Information Systems (GIS) analyses as well as Data Management using Open Source GIS tools and MS Excel. The specific work assignment will include cartography, community engagement data management and the authoring, deploying and managing digital data collection activities using mobile technology.
Responsibilities:
- Develop, operate, and maintain mapping applications and tools using open source GIS tools such as QGIS.
- Evaluate needs and identify opportunities for improving operations using GIS technology.
- Develop and document applications and processes utilizing knowledge of GIS technology and software.
- Collect, maintain, and validate GIS data as part of various BCP project sites.
- Develop and analyze ad-hoc maps and data, and provides related graphic support.
- Create, edit, and maintain GIS vector data.
- Performs QA/QC checks on data, tables, and mapping.
- Apply basic software to manage spatial and related tabular data.
- Assists in writing basic software routines to facilitate analysis.
- Locates sources of GIS data from Government, state agencies, and private companies.
- Assists in analyzing image data using basic image processing software.
- Knowledge of global positioning systems (GPS).
- Perform duties general/routine to moderately complex in nature.
- Ability to think and work independently, prioritize, exhibit initiative and good judgment.
- Other job related duties as assigned including technical support for field based data collection.
- Willing to travel and work in remote environments for extended periods of time in challenging conditions.
Required Qualifications
- BSc (BTech) degree in Geographic Information Systems, computer science, geography or a GIS certificate from an accredited institution
- Minimum of two (2) years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
- Typical experience ranges from 2-5 years.
Required Competencies
- Proficient knowledge of and ability to utilize FOSS GIS products such as, QGIS, Orfeo Tool Box, GDAL, R, etc.
- Production of cartographic products using QGIS.
- Intermediate PC skills to include Microsoft software products as well as various Google Apps.
- Previous experience using Microsoft Excel or equivalent to perform quality assessment and control (QA/QC) on tabular data.
- Knowledge of REDD and REDD+ processors as they pertain to the Verified Carbon Standard and the UNFCCC.
Recommended Competencies
- Knowledge of Windows operating systems.
- Knowledge of Android operating systems and Smartphone technology.
- Knowledge and proficiency in the use of the Open Data Kit.
- Knowledge and proficiency in the use of GPS like Android applications, such as BackCountry Navigator.
Working Conditions
The position advertised is for a Technician level GIS and Data Management assistant to join the Carbon Accounting department of BioCarbon Partners based in Mfuwe, Zambia. The successful candidate may be required to travel to various SADC countries in support of BCPs core business activities.
