Technical and Marketing Assistant

Position: Technical and Marketing Assistant (TMA), Zambia
Project: USAID-funded Community Forests Program (CFP)
Location: Lusaka, Zambia – with frequent travel to rural REDD+ sites in Rufunsa / Eastern Province
Duration: 1 year, renewable contract
Reporting To: Technical Coordinator & Enterprise Development Advisor
BioCarbon Partners (BCP) is a dynamic African-registered and headquartered REDD+ development and management company. BCP is a social enterprise that engages in community-focused conservation work, whose aim is to involve and empower local people in the areas in which it operates. BCP seeks to foster positive relationships with local people and their leaders, so that together they can work as allies in their effort to conserve African landscapes, and so that conservation efforts benefit local communities. BCP is currently implementing the USAID-funded Community Forests Program (CFP), which aims to expand verified REDD+ activities across 700,000 hectares in Eastern Zambia, in close collaboration with community stakeholders and GRZ partners.
Under the CFP, BCP is seeking a dynamic, talented, responsible, personable and well-spoken individual to serve as a Technical and Marketing Assistant. This position is intended to support both the Administrative and Technical Teams, by completing technical, procurement and administrative tasks that support program operations, namely Eco-Charcoal project logistics, field-based Community, Site Selection and Management teams, CFP Site Visits, and by serving as a well-spoken representative of BCP, to market our REDD+ activities to potential partners, investors and/or donors.
This position is Lusaka-based, but involves frequent travel to rural REDD+ project sites in Rufunsa District and/or Eastern Province, and potentially other areas within Zambia. The individual in this position must have some experience in logistics and marketing, and possess a valid Zambian Driver’s License, and must be comfortable self-driving large manual vehicles (including Toyota Land Cruisers, etc) in rural areas of Zambia, including on dirt roads.
Responsibilities:
  • Procurement and Administrative Support:
    • Support administrative tasks such as procurement and logistics for technical operations in the field.
    • Driving: The individual in this position will often function as an additional driver to support CFP’s operations, either in Lusaka or at rural REDD+ field-sites.
  • Eco-Charcoal Project Support:
    • Coordinate logistics and sales for Eco-Charcoal project, which involves distribution of EcoCharcoal primarily in Greater Lusaka area.
    • Promote the Eco-Charcoal product through events and other promotional activities.
    • Interact with customers primarily from hospitality (lodges, restaurants) and supermarket industries.
  • Site Visit Coordination: the TMA will assist in coordinating Site Visits to REDD+ sites which include:
    • Preparation of Site Visit Schedules;
    • Coordination of Site Visit activities, including coordinating with field-based Technical Team members and/or community or partner representatives who will be involved in the Site Visit;
    • Collaboration with the Communications Specialist to develop promotional and marketing materials, and supporting documents for Site Visits;
    • Logistical coordination of vehicles, travel advances, purchases, and food materials related to Site Visits;
    • Serving as an informed and well-spoken “Tour Guide” on Site Visits, who is capable of effectively, positively and accurately communicating about REDD+ activities under the CFP
    • Driving visitors for Site Visits.
  • Field-based Technical Facilitation:
    • The TMA may also be requested to travel to rural REDD+ field sites to support field-based teams in site selection and other activities, including: driving, camp preparation, field-based logistics and administrative support.
Competencies and Qualifications:
  • Some background in marketing, sales and/or logistics.
  • Valid Zambian driving license with minimum 2 years professional driving experience
  • Ability to drive manual vehicles
  • Ability to drive vehicles on poor quality dirt roads in rural areas
  • Proficiency in additional languages preferred, including local languages in Eastern/Muchinga Provinces
  • Fluency in English
  • Strong communication skills—written and spoken
  • Self-driven, motivated, responsible, able to take initiative
  • Ability and willingness to travel and spend time in rural areas (villages, remote camps).
