WorldFish , a member of the CGIAR Consortium, is an international, nonprofit research organization. CGIAR is a global partnership that unites organizations engaged in research for a food secure future. CGIAR research is dedicated to reducing rural poverty, increasing food security, improving human health and nutrition, and ensuring more sustainable management of natural resources. It is carried out by the 15 centers who are members of the CGIAR Consortium in close collaboration with hundreds of partner organizations, including national and regional research institutes, civil society organizations, academia, and the private sector.

COMMUNICATION OFFICER
(for WorldFish managed, EU funded Fish Trade Programme)
Overview
The EU funded programme ‘Improving Food Security and Reducing Poverty through intra-regional Fish Trade in sub-Saharan Africa’ is an exciting project with deliverables in line with government commitments made in the 2014 Malabo declaration. The programme is designed to enhance the capacities of regional and pan-African organizations to support their member states to better integrate intra-regional fish trade into their development and food security policy agendas. Focusing on four main trade corridors, in Western, Southern, Eastern and Central Africa, the project is conducting research to strengthen the evidence base for coherent policy development at national and regional levels, support the formulation and implementation of appropriate policies, standards and regulatory frameworks to promote intra-regional fish trade, and strengthen the capacity of private sector associations, in particular of women fish traders, to enhance the competitiveness of small- and medium-scale enterprises engaged in this trade.
The Communications Officer will be responsible for developing and implementing internal and external communication strategies working closely with our partners. The Communications Officer will provide support for media outreach, publication development and knowledge management. The Communications Officer will monitor and evaluate communications activities so as to provide recommendations on appropriate methods to communicate the activities and programme outcomes for others as well as develop tools for capacity building.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop internal and external communication strategies
- Oversee the implementation of these strategies
- Monitor and evaluate communication activities
- Develop communication materials that support policy influencing
- Raise awareness of the project and its outputs with policy makers, partners and funder
- Conduct capacity strengthening on communication for influencing policy
Skill Requirements:
- At least a bachelor’s degree in Communications or Journalism
- More than 4 years relevant work experience in communications, media relations, journalism or development communications
- Strong English language and editing skills required (Please submit writing samples)
- Media relations experience preferred, with focus on communications for policy influence
- Experienced in developing working relationships with a range of stakeholders at the local and national level
- Able to work within tight deadlines and deal with pressure situations
- Sound judgment, effective decision-making and personal accountability
- Possess the ability to identify potential issues and provide solutions
- Reliable, confident and enthusiastic with excellent organizational skills
- Highly collaborative and team oriented
Desired
- Knowledge of how gender relations influence the effectiveness of communications in Africa
- Ability to work in French and/or Portuguese
Timeframe and location
This position will be based at WorldFish’s country office in Lusaka, Zambia, and will involve travel to various countries in Africa. Interviews are expected to be held in Lusaka, Zambia during third week of July 2015, and short-listed candidates should be available to attend.
The successful candidate should be available to commence by 1st September 2015 for an initial 28 months period, with possibility of renewal depending on performance of and funding situation. Only short-listed candidates will be notified.
