Background

Marie Stopes Zambia (MSZ) provides sexual and reproductive healthcare to thousands of the country’s poorest and most vulnerable women.
MSI is committed to conducting high quality research to explore ways to improve quality, access and equity. MSZ is carrying out a USAID-funded research project focussing on task-sharing of tubal ligations in Zambia, through the Strengthening International Family Planning Programme-Marie Stopes International (SIFPO-MSI).
Purpose
The purpose of this role is to coordinate a research study on task-sharing of tubal ligations being conducted in Zambia through Marie Stopes Zambia.
Specific activities
This position will cover the following activities:
- Oversee the implementation of a tubal ligation task-sharing study in Zambia as per the approved protocol
- Produce a detailed workplan for the project lifetime, within the existing timeframe
- Recruit, train, manage and supervise a team of data collectors
- Recruit, train, manage and supervise a team of data entry clerks
- Organise clinical training of Clinical Officers
- Liaise with study sites
- Manage procurement, storage, and distribution of commodities
- Liaise with MSZ teams such as: communications; clinical services; and marketing
- Oversee all data collection to ensure: compliance to USAID and protocol guidelines; adherence to principles of ethical research; accuracy of data
- Manage logistics of enumerators and data collection tools for data collection, including follow-up visits
- Engage, supervise and coordinate Clinical Supervisors
- Management of routine Adverse Event reports for TLs
- Engage and provide routine reports to Study Monitoring Board
- Provide routine reports to relevant ERC boards
- Assist in data analysis and report-writing
- Liaise closely with, and provide regular updates to, the PI and co-PI in Zambia and UK
- Ensuring that implementation complies with ethical standards of the local, MSI, and USAID ethics boards.
- Any other tasks that may arise during implementation of the protocol
Skill Requirements
This post requires an individual with excellent project management skills, good attention to detail and good research skills, who is flexible, shows strong initiative, and has excellent communication skills. Specific requirements are:
- Masters degree in Public Health or similar
- Proven understanding of research and M&E
- Experience of project management
- Proven ability to work independently
- Good attention to detail
- Proficient in SPSS (preferred) or STATA
- Proficient in Excel
- Proficient in Epi-Info
- Excellent communicator
- Fluent English – both written and spoken
- Knowledge of FP and SRH
- Strong interpersonal skills, customer focus, cultural sensitivity and awareness
- Pro-choice, with a strong commitment to the vision and goals of MSI.
Timing and reporting requirements
This position will start as soon as possible.
The Research Officer will be supervised by the Research and Metrics Manager for each phase of implementation. The Research Officer will also work closely with the Clinical Services Manager who will facilitate access to the clinical sites as well as provide clinical guidance on safety and quality of service delivery. The Programs Director will be responsible for overall management of the project.
