Conservation Coordinator

Position: Conservation Coordinator
Contract: Full Time, up to 4 years plus
Location: Lusaka, Eastern and Muchinga Provinces (Luangwa Valley, Zambia)
Reporting To: Deputy Chief of Party
BioCarbon Partners (BCP) is an African-registered and headquartered community forestry project development and management company. BCP has launched Zambia’s first pilot REDD+ project, and now seeks a talented Program Manager to scale up jurisdictional level REDD+ through the exciting 5- year, USAID funded Community Forests Program in the Luangwa Valley. The candidate will ideally be a highly flexible ‘jack of all trades’ and ‘master of many’: a gifted conservationist who can support all facets of landscape-level community forestry projects, including assisting with land management, capacity building, engagement, forest monitoring coordination, biodiversity monitoring system, security planning, landscape conservation planning, and infrastructure development within a landscape level community forest carbon project.
The position will be field-based in Rufunsa District and mobile in field conditions to support BCP’s new sites in the Luangwa Valley (Nyimba, Lupande). The candidate must be independent and trustworthy, and must be able to lead, and work as part of a team. Critically, the candidate must be able to take initiative, be an excellent coordinator and consensus builder who helps to develop multiple conservation landscape sites into a larger landscape program.
Responsibilities:
  • Program Management: Work closely with other technical members of the BCP team to develop and implement overall strategies for community engagement, land use and forest management to sustainably manage 700,000+ hectares of Participatory Forest Management Areas (PFMAs) in multiple provinces in Zambia.
  • Consultation: Participate in ongoing relationships from local and national level stakeholders from communities and government, and assist in designing stakeholder engagement strategies to promote buy-in and collaboration in landscape-level forest management efforts.
  • Security Planning: Contribute to capacity development, training, and security planning with partners such as CRBs, and partners to support community-based forest management and address illegal wildlife trade issues.
  • Engagement: Support social services development and Enterprise Development projects in partnering communities to promote effective and scalable alternative livelihood strategies benefiting local communities, and contributing to BCP’s objectives and business model.
  • Planning: Develop and lead participatory forest management planning processes to develop forest management and land use plans in the PFMA.
  • Data Collection and Management: Identify data needs and facilitate collection of data for forest carbon accounting, forest management planning, implementation and biodiversity monitoring. Oversee Forest Monitoring teams in each PFMA.
  • Training: Manage, train and oversee Forest Managers, Forest Coordinators and Forest Monitors.
  • Budget Management and Reporting: Manage PFMA budgets and relevant reporting.
  • Technical Support: Coordinate technical support to ZAWA, Forestry Department, and CRBs in relevant GMAs, including training coordination and capacity development support.
  • Logistics: Coordinate the logistics involved in managing conservation projects in remote areas, ensure compliant procurement systems and BCP’s field vehicles are well maintained and utilized.
  • Infrastructure development: Plan and develop field headquarters and other infrastructure projects in PFMAs, and in surrounding communities (social development projects). Coordinate maintenance, field asset inventories and oversee maintenance of project equipment and infrastructure.
Competencies:
  • Master’s degree in forestry, natural resource management, conservation or related field of study
  • A minimum of 5 years of professional experience in community-based natural resource management or forestry, or national park technical support with a strong preference for experience in Zambia or the region
  • Proven ability to develop, implement and monitor conservation management plans.
  • Strong logistical, construction and maintenance experience in remote settings.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage multiple stakeholders in planning processes related to CBNRM, conservation management, REDD+ or related topics.
  • Experience managing and training teams in conservation management planning
  • Excellent writing and data management skills
  • Demonstrated ability to manage large teams at multiple field sites
  • Excellent written and verbal skills in English
  • Strong facilitation skills with demonstrated ability to build consensus among diverse stakeholders around a common vision
Qualifications:
  • Valid Driver’s license.
  • Proficiency in English required.
  • Demonstrated logistics, scheduling and procurement experience.
  • Computer literate (MS Office)
