Productivity and Flood Risk Research Analyst (Mongu, Zambia)
Background
The Productivity Scientist will drive the implementation of the Productivity and Flood Risk Initiatives from within the Barotse Hub. He or she will have the responsibility of ensuring robust scientific data is collected from participatory action research processes. The data should then be managed and analyzed to generate evidence for improved productive and flood risk management practices. They will work closely with other Hub Team members to coordinate activities within the initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
  • Annual productivity/Flood  Risk research workplans for each of the 10 AAS communities approved by the hub manager
  • Develop and maintain relationships with key partners including MAL, DMMU, Concern Worldwide, Caritas and PPCR
  • Plan and facilitate participatory action research on productivity and hydro-meteorological research
  • Manage implementation and data collection from productivity/Flood Risk activities
  • Input and manage data and conduct initial analysis of data
  • Monthly progress report for the AAS hub manager and AAS productivity  and flood risk initiative leaders
  • Documentation of the Research in Development processes undertaken to improve productivity and flood risk management
  • Reports on the progress towards effective coordination with wider set of activities such as agriculture fairs, Canal Management Committee meetings, Disaster Management Committee and other key community events that may be used to link agricultural and ensure stakeholder influence
  • Timely submission of AAS planning and reporting documents
  • Inputs to publications with the Barotse Hub Team and Zambia Productivity Research Team and  the Flood Risk Initiative.
Essential skills and qualifications:
  • Masters degree in agriculture production and/ or natural resources research
  • Knowledge of agricultural production and/or farming systems research
  • Demonstrated understanding of research design, including participatory methods
  • Proven ability in quantitative and qualitative data collection, management and analysis using statistical packages
  • Understanding of the principles of hydrology
  • Excellent and proven communication skills (i.e. written and oral) to a wide range of audiences and stakeholders
  • Understanding of agricultural productivity constraints and their underlying causes in Zambia
  • Understanding of potential mechanisms and solutions to addressing agricultural productivity constraints in Zambia
  • Good capability in agricultural extension/communication, particularly participatory method.
Desired skills and qualifications:
  • Fluency or working knowledge of Lozi
  • Understanding of nutrition
  • Knowledge of gender transformative approaches in rural development
  • Knowledge of agrobiodiversity resources and ecosystem services
  • Experience with productivity assessments
  • Knowledge of GIS and remote sensing
  • Ability to use qualitative software packages like Nvivo
Our offer
This position will be based in Mongu, Zambia. The initial employment contract will be for a three-year term, with possibility of renewal. It is a mid level position that is open to Zambian nationals (NRS). Subject to applicant status, salary and benefits will be in compliance with WorldFish NRS remuneration policies.
