Terms of Reference
Consultant for Nutrition Training
Background
SNV Zambia and World food programme in conjunction with the Ministry of Education, science, Vocational Training and Early Education (MESVTEE) is piloting an eight month model school pilot project that will demonstrate the possibilities for home grown school feeding (HGSF) in addressing the problem with hunger and malnutrition among children in Zambia
The project showcases the manner in which HGSF can also promote nutrition education for teachers, pupils and parents through demonstrations in the school garden and extracurricular activities. The school and its surrounding community is assisted to establish and manage the school garden and a bio digester unit that will enable the school to produce energy to cook food provided for the children as well as generating bio-slurry which is a rich organic fertiliser that will support the garden. The project site is in Katete, Kamphambe Primary School.
It is anticipated that successful completion of the pilot will enable funding to be leveraged to roll out a wider model school programme as part of GRZ/WFP plans to increase HGSF from 280,000 to 1 million pupils by 2015.
Objective of the assignment
To improve nutrition outcomes by adopting of agro biodiversity and improved dietary diversity at the school and household level through nutrition training to the community members, teachers and pupils at Kamphambe Primary School.
Duties and expected activities
In delivering on this assignment, the nutritionist will be required to undertake the following specific tasks/activities:
  • Develop a training programme that covers
  • General nutritional needs of the child and adults
  • Function of vitamins and minerals in the body
  • Where vitamins and minerals can be found and in what concentrations in fruits and vegetables
  • How fruits and vegetables can be prepared in order to ensure that nutrients are not lost; portion size and control
  • Practical demonstrations of food preparation and preservation to minimise nutrient loss
  • How the fruits and vegetables can be dried, bottled or otherwise preserved in order to enable year round access.
Location of the activity: 2 days at Katete, Kamphambe Primary School. The Consultant will be provided with transport to the venue, DSA for meals and accommodation.
Methodology: The consultant will meet with the SNV MSPP team to review the curriculum and finalize the training programme before the actual training. Diverse approaches to impacting the relevant knowledge are encouraged.
Nature of participants in activity: Community Teachers and Parents.
Duration of the agreement
This is a 5 days assignment that ends on 5th of June 2015. The trainings in Katete will take place on the 1st and 2nd of June 2015. The relationship between SNV and Nutritionist will be based on sub-contractor agreement with clear obligations for each party.

Deliverables
The deliverables must respond sufficiently to the scope of work as detailed in paragraph 3.0. Specifically the following documentation will be required as physical evidence of the full accomplishment of the assignment:
  • Signed registers of community trained including details of age, sex and national registration (NRC) numbers in hardcopy and digital format
  • Training Evaluation Forms signed by trainees in hardcopy only
  • Training report (bound hardcopy and digital format) including photo files in JPEG. Format
Qualification and submission requirement
  • A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Nutrition, social work, Agribusiness, Agronomy, Rural Development/Relevant Discipline
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in nutrition and agricultural related areas,
  • Demonstrated knowledge on how to improve agro-biodiversity and dietary diversity.
  • Demonstrated experience in providing capacity development services
  • Excellent written English and good computer literacy skills including use of Microsoft and adobe.
  • Ability to communicate fluently in Nyanja or Chewa
